Baseline Bombers qualify for PTL final

Jeevan Neduncheziyan's doubles play carries the day for Dazzling Duces as they sneak past Vibrant Volleyers for second win

Pune, December 1: Big serving Saketh Myneni and the mixed doubles pair of Kedar Shah and Prarthana Thombare lived up to the billing to steer Baseline Bombers into the final of the 3rd Amanora Premier Tennis League at the Deccan Gymkhana courts here on Monday.

It was a stirring performance by Bombers as they still have one rubber in hand against Vibrant Volleyers on the morrow.

Baseline Bombers began with a loss when their women's singles player, Rashmi Teltumbde lost to Rishika Sunkara 5-6 (12-14) in the longest match of the PTL. But then rest of the team picked up well as Vijay Sundar Prashant fired aces and down the line winners to outgun Davis Cupper Vishnu Vardhan 6-3.

Saketh Myneni was tentative throughout, but held himself when needed the most and won 6-5 (7-3) in the tie-break to beat Sriram Balaji. The scores were 17-14 and the match was still live when Kedar Shah and Prarthana Thombare jelled fantastically to beat the Accurate Aces pair of Ajai Selvaraj and Eetee Mehta 6-4.

Finally Saketh and Rupesh Roy started wobbly but forced the men's doubles match into tie-breaker before beating the duo of Balaji and Arun Prakash for 29-23 win.

Duces sneak through against Volleyers

Jeevan Neduncheziyan redeemed himself after having lost his singles match to Ramkumar Ramanathan by scoring an inspiring men's doubles win by pairing with Kaza Sharma to give Dazzling Duces one of the narrowest win in the league.

In the 5-match rubber, Dazzling Duces lost three but still managed to score 25-24 win to leaving Vibrant Volleyers virtually out of contention of the final berth.

With two wins from three matches and one match to go on the morrow, Dazzling Duces stand a realistic chance to make the grade. Duces take on winless Sharp Smashers in the final league tie.

Dazzling Duces made an unlikely start with India No 1 Ankita Raina lost to Natasha Palha in tie-break 5-6 (4-7). This wasn't a start Duces were looking at but gutsy Mohit Mayur came out firing to beat Chandril Sood 6-2 to get ahead in the match.

But Jeevan let go that advantage when he lost to Ramkumar Ramanathan 4-6 and Duces misery was further compounded when their mixed doubles pair of Christopher Marquis and Shweta Rana lost to VM Ranjeet and Arantxa Andrady 4-6.

With the stakes so high, Jeevan rose to the challenge and combined well with Kaza to shut out the Vibrant Volleyers' tandem of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Anvit Bendre 6-4 for 25-24 win.
